The Business Development Manager advises, assists, and supports the Senior Partner concerning all aspects of the firm’s development and execution of its marketing plan. The Business Development Manager is also responsible for supervising and coordinating, both internally and externally, the firm’s client relations and public relations programs. He reports directly to the Managing Director.
The Business Development Manager’s performance evaluation is completed by the Managing Director.
This is a full-time position.
Principal responsibilities
• Advise the Senior Partner, Managing Director, and other fee earners and managers in the firm concerning all aspects of the implementation of the firm’s strategies and plans in the areas of marketing, business development, public relations, and client relations.
• Draft and update the firm's marketing plan, with input from the Managing Director and the Senior Counsels, and submit it to the Managing Director for further review by the Board of Directors and approval by the equity partners.
• As directed by the Managing Director, prepare and manage the firm’s marketing and public relations budgets.
• In accordance with the approved marketing budget, contract with and supervise the performance of external service providers in areas such as website and traditional marketing materials, advertising, visual image, and sales skills development for lawyers.
• Assist and coordinate with the firm’s lawyers in attracting, evaluating, and considering invitations to directorships.
• Contribute content to, edit, and publish the firm’s newsletters, periodicals, and other printed and electronic marketing materials.
• Advise and assist fee earners in the development, drafting, and publication of articles in external business and professional media.
• Improve the firm’s presence and participation in national, regional, and international professional organizations and trade associations.
• Prepare and submit profiles and other information to international legal directories, such as Legal 500, Chambers Global Guide, and the IFLR 1000.
• Manage the firm’s client relations management system and supporting databases and mailing lists.
• Manage regular periodic client satisfaction surveys, post-matter satisfaction questionnaires, major client interviews, and other data concerning client needs, service expectations, and satisfaction levels.
• Manage and coordinate public relations and client relations events, such as seminars, receptions, and social events.
• Perform other marketing-related functions and duties as assigned by the Managing Director.
Required education and experience
A fully-qualified occupant of this position possesses these educational and experience credentials:
• Significant university-level education in business administration, marketing, public relations, or some other academic discipline relevant to the responsibilities required by this position; and
• At least five years successful experience as the member of the marketing, public relations, or customer service function of a professional services firm. A university degree in marketing or public relations may be substituted for three of the five years of required experience.

To perform the responsibilities of this position at a satisfactory level, the Business Development Manager must demonstrate mastery of these business skills and competencies on a regular, frequent basis:
• The ability to communicate the firm's marketing and client relations policies and their rationales clearly, accurately, and persuasively, to fee earners and staff
• Ability to understand and articulate the firm’s products, services, delivery capabilities, and competitive advantages in a clear, relevant, and compelling manner to clients, prospective clients, and the business community
• Proficiency in Word™ and Powerpoint™, or similar office applications sufficient to develop original marketing presentations and materials that are attractive and professional-looking
• Writing and speaking skills in the Arabic language commensurate to those commonly found among marketing professionals in the Saudi Arabian business community
• Proficiency in the English language commensurate to that commonly found in marketing professionals in major international law firms in the Middle East
• Demonstrated skills in cost-effective management of budgets
• Time and workload management skills sufficient to complete multiple high-priority tasks and projects efficiently, on time, and with an acceptable level of quality
Future roles and responsibilities
As the firm continues to grow, it is probable that other marketing personnel will be added in full-time or part-time Marketing Assistant and Senior Marketing Assistant positions. If this happens, the Business Development Manager would also assume responsibilities for supervising them and for managing the distribution of media-relations and marketing work to and among them.
