Jobs Description : This position description outlines the responsibilities and qualifications of the position of Lawyer. In our firm, a Lawyer is the equivalent of an associate position or staff counsel position in other law firms. This position description covers Lawyers who have only recently been qualified to practice law, as well as experienced ones. This position description should therefore be tailored further to the specific levels of experience and responsibility of each Lawyer.
 


At present, this firm has three general types of Lawyer position:

 



• Corporate / Commercial Lawyer: These are usually recruited by the firm at one of three levels: (1) entry level; (2) at least two years post-qualification experience; or (3) at least four years post qualification experience.

• General Litigation Lawyer: Our firm does not hire entry level Lawyers in litigation. To be eligible for a Lawyer position in the Litigation / Arbitration practice group, one must have a minimum of two years post-qualification experience. 

• Litigation / Arbitration Lawyer: This is a Lawyer in the Litigation / Arbitration practice group who has at least four years post qualification experience, as well as significant specific experience and expertise in arbitration.



A Lawyer is a full-time employee of this firm, who is qualified to practice law. Each Lawyer is permanently assigned to a practice group, as determined by his individual legal expertise and experience and by the needs of the firm. Because of the size of the firm, however, a Lawyer should expect occasionally to practice part-time with another practice group other than the one to which he is assigned.



A Lawyer is appointed by, and serves as the pleasure of, the Managing Director. However the involuntary termination of a Lawyer also requires the concurrence of the Senior Partner.



A Lawyer is supervised by the Senior Counsel of the practice group to which he is assigned. The professional performance of Lawyers is evaluated by the Managing Director, with input from each Lawyer’s Senior Counsel.



This is a full-time position.



Principal responsibilities

 


Delivery of the business plan

 


• Under the guidance and supervision of a Senior Counsel, provide professional legal services and advice to the firm’s clients.

• Supervise support staff as necessary to perform one’s professional duties.

• Comply with the firm’s internal administrative and financial management procedures.

• Perform other professional and administrative functions as may be assigned by the Senior Counsel, Managing Director, or Senior Partner.

Execution of the Firm’s marketing plan
• Participate in the marketing activities of the firm and the practice groups as directed by the Senior Partner or a Senior Counsel.

• Create a positive image of the firm, both in Saudi Arabia and also internationally.
 


Performance management

 


• With the guidance and assistance of one’s Senior Counsel and the Managing Director, develop and achieve individual performance goals linked to the business plan and the marketing plan.

• Request and participate in informal coaching and mentoring from the one’s Senior Counsel, the Managing Director, or more experienced fee earners, as needed to achieve one’s own full professional potential.

• Participate in one’s own professional performance appraisal..

• Learn about the current and probable future business issues and objectives of the client sectors that the firm serves.

• Continue to learn and apply professional expertise and business skills to one’s own practice.

• Display the highest ethical standards.

• Provide a positive example of personal integrity and professional performance to everyone in the firm.
 

 


Required education and experience

 


A fully-qualified occupant of this position possesses these educational and experience credentials:

• A law degree from an law school or university authorized to award degrees; and

• Qualification or admission to practice law in Saudi Arabia or in another jurisdiction that is relevant to the firm’s client base or line of professional services; and

• Except for an entry-level position, a minimum of two to four years successful experience in the practice of law, depending on the experience level required by the specific position; and

• For a position as a Litigation / Arbitration Lawyer, at least four years successful experience in the practice of law, including significant specific expertise and experience in arbitration.
 

 


Required skills and competencies

 


To perform the responsibilities of this position at a satisfactory level, one must demonstrate mastery of these business skills and competencies on a regular, frequent basis:

• A demonstrated understanding of and unreserved commitment to the firm’s expectations for personal integrity, professional ethics, commitment to excellence, diligence, and dedication to the clients

• A demonstrated knowledge of the basic techniques and tools of legal research

• A broad understanding of the basic legal concepts in one’s own practice area

• Confidence in one’s ability to deal with non-standard and complicated client questions

• Fluency in Arabic and English comparable to that found in law firms in Saudi Arabia with international commercial and litigation practices

• A demonstrated ability to express complex concepts clearly in writing

• An understanding of, and commitment to, continuous improvement in the firm’s operations and one’s own practice

• Good time-management, collaboration, and teamwork skills

• A willingness to implement the changes required in the firm and in one’s own practice in order to achieve goals
